Not sure what phone you have but most have a built in power widget that have a brightness control. There are a lot of widgets to control screen brightness but I use Widgetsoid only because it is more customizable and i can match it to any theme/color i want and put up to 10 items/shortcuts into one widget bar.

I use two apps that include this feature. You can set up profiles on both. "Power Manager" and "Timeriffic". I think the second would be more of what you are looking for though. Both work great.

My phone has a brightness setting that allows you to turn on auto brightness. It uses the light sensor to determine the ambient lighting and adjusts the brightness according.

I am personally unhappy with the auto brightness as you cannot choose what brightness setting corresponds to what ambient light level. Therefore, I use a widget that toggles through three brightness levels with a touch of the widget called Brightness Widget. I manually adjust the brightness with this widget to my liking.
