Help Screen Freezes/Goes to black ONLY when Calling

My phone works fine up until I decide to call someone. It dials, but then the screen becomes black and absolutely untouchable. Afterwords the phone stays that way. I try pressing multiple buttons. Nothing helps unless I take the battery out. It only does this when I call someone. I've only had this phone for a couple of months. Never did anything bad to it except drop it a few times, but it has an otterbox on it. Any help please?

I'm having the exact same problem. Happens when receiving a call as well - just goes black and essentially freezes. Only a battery pull fixes it. I'm hoping someone has the answer.

@mjolson5 I figured it out. The sensor is on the top left corner of the phone. There's probably something covering or obstructing it.

Those sensors are designed to shut the screen off when covered during a call but when uncovered the screen will turn back on. Anything over those during a call will keep the screen off including a case and they only activate during a call.
