A button sometimes shows up on my screen (kind of like the toolbox) and it has a remote control icon on it. I can drag it around the screen to get it out of the way but I cannot get rid of it. If I tap it, my screen gets slightly darker and freezes forcing me to remove the battery and power on my phone again.

It's the Peel Smart Remote app. It started misbehaving on a lot of people's phones recently.
Go to Settings > Apps > All, find it and either uninstall (if it will let you) or disable it and you won't suffer this again.
