Screen help

Not sure if this is an android thing or a samsung thing.

You have a two locations for apps, ie you have shortcuts to apps and then you have them also located elsewhere.

What is the purpose of this?

Sorry if this is ignorant. I am used to the iphone where everything is together and no need for the "home" button on the touchscreen.

Welcome to AF

What model Samsung device do you have, I will direct you to your device forum for proper support and help

Think of it as like a PC. You have a desktop where you put your shortcuts, then a Start menu where all your other programs reside. Then you can put stuff on your desktop like folders, gadgets/widgets. An iPhone does not have widgets, which is why it did not need a desktop.

For example, you can have widgets on your homescreen that shows a facebook+twitter timeline, then you can have shortcuts to chat apps underneath and have a "social network screen", then on another screen, you can have a weather widget showing the weather for the next few days as well as other shortcuts. Once you discover widgets, that's when you'll understand the homescreen logic.

Basically, you can separate the apps you use a lot and combine it with widgets so you can view data easily and access related apps more easily than on an iPhone where you have to plow through all your apps or have to go to folders. On Android, using widgets, you don't even need to open an app to see what your schedule is. You do need it installed though, but you don't need to see it.

As an example, here are a couple of old screenshots from my phone.

An agenda screen containing an agenda/calendar widget and a few apps:
