Screen just went dark- upgrade or insurance?

I dropped my phone today and the screen is dark now. I can just BARELY make out what is on the screen. It's not broken, but it is so dark I can kind of see the clock numbers in a room without light. So I am debating about getting a replacement on my insurance or upgrading to an Incredible which I can get through verizon for $99. Any opinions?

You'd get the replacement through standard Verizon insurance, right? Why the hell wouldn't you do it? You'd get a free Certified Like-New Replacement Droid that actually works, and then from there couldn't you just upgrade to whatever you want? It's not like cashing in on Verizon's insurance extends your contract.

If you're talking about Asurion insurance which has a ~$90 deductible, just get the Incredible. If you have to pay the same thing for a Droid and an Incredible, the choice is obvious.

I don't remember who my insurance is through, but I know there is a deductible of some sort. I think the Incredible would be a good phone (better than the Fascinate I was also comparing with), but I'm not 100% sure I want to start a new 2 yr. contract right now.
Hmmm, decisions...
Oh yeah, the other issue is I am leaving to go out of town Thursday morning and I'm not sure if Verizon could have a replacement Droid to me by then. Ugh, what bad timing.

Oh, the Incredible is that price under a new contract, that's right. I thought you were talking about getting a used one off-contract.

If I were you, I'd get something on a one-year contract right now. Something like a certified like-new Incredible, Droid 2, Droid X would easily last that year, and then you'll be up for an upgrade shortly after all the awesome phones announced for this summer come out in early 2012 after being delayed about 5 times. ;)

You could also just go with a ThunderBolt on a 2-year contract if you really wanted to.

No different than any other "Which device should I get?" thread. You need to consider your needs/wants. Mine -- or anyone else's -- don't matter. I personally wouldn't get an Incredible at this point (it's an old device) but if you think it's a good fit then go for it.

Asurion is Verizon insurance. It's the warranty (not the same as insurance and not relevant to this thread) that is handled through Verizon.

Have you called to check your deductible? I just had to file a claim to replace my OG Droid and my deductible was only $50. I lost the phone on a Saturday and had my new one by Tuesday since Asurion ships next day for free.

I went to the Verizon store and ended up getting a Droid X. I haven't really been interested in one because of the size, but after playing around it hasn't been that bad. Plus, I have 14 days to try it out. There were some cons to the other two phones I listed and I really liked the hard buttons on the X.

If you want to get your phone working again until you decide, try dropping it from about 2 feet up onto a table, positioned so that it falls on the top edge of the phone. I know this sounds ridiculous, but my screen has gone dead after having been dropped a few times, and that always gets it working again. There's some sort of design flaw that must cause something to disconnect when dropped a certain way, but dropping it the opposite way puts it back into place.

Hey, you're already considering a new phone so it's worth a shot, right?

I definitely need to advise against this. Your issue sounds like an intermittent short or something that gets knocked back into place temporarily by another shock, and that's why this works for you.
