Help Screen not working, can't enter unlock pattern/account info

Good People,

The touch screen on my Eris has stopped working in certain areas over the past few weeks. This led me to have to tilt my phone after almost every letter when inputting any text, which though frustrating was something I could work around. Last night when trying to unlock my phone the dead area of my screen appeared to have grown as I couldn't swipe properly and after 15 attempts I was locked out.

I thought my type and tilt trick would work, but alas that option isn't available on the "enter account info" screen. I can enter my Gmail name correctly as (thankfully) those letters fall within the working area of my screen. But my 45 letter (you can it overkill if you want) password is impossible. I've tried looking for ways to randomly access my phone (such as a remote keyboard), finding ways to use a USB keyboard on it and other such means with no luck. I've tried every method I've stumbled upon but none of those work.

After lurking for a while I thought I'd ask the users here. I know I could replace the screen/sensor, but I hate this...thing...with every fiber of my being and am only holding out until other options present themselves.

Thanks in advance, these are the words of a desperate man. :(

Sounds like the exact same problem I'm having, only I'm not as security conscious as you, so I'm not locked out of my phone. I've become a master of rotating the phone just so I can type in an N or O (and many other letters). I have no advice other than ordering a new touch screen digitizer and replacing it. I just got mine in the mail today and plan on attacking it tomorrow. Its a cheap part, and will hopefully get me to August 28th or longer so I can hold on for some delicious September phones. Here's the link where I got mine, it comes with tools necessary to do the job:

New Touch Screen Digitizer For HTC Droid Eris CDMA +TL | eBay

shipping was great, got it in 3 days.

Ha! Yep, my wife has had a kick out of me rotating my phone every other letter so I can type out the most basic of messages. If anything good has come of this, I've at least started talking to people more because of how much of a pain texting is.

The link you have is outdated, but I did do some research. Everything I see is around $20, which isn't a lot of money but it chaps my a_ _ that I would have to pay anything more for this piece of you-know-what, so I'll probably hold on for a bit. I can't believe how common this is; I'm going to have such a great time destroying this thing! ;)
