Screen protector

So, I still have the film that came on the device when I got it... I know, I should be ashamed. I am.

My Galaxy Nexus did not have a screen protector, and I can confidently say that its screen is in outstanding shape. No noticeable scratches.

Should I get a screen protector on my Moto X? Is the glass on it durable enough to be ok without one? (Did I read it has Corning's Gorilla Glass?). Is there a screen protector someone can recommend that feel as close to nothing as possible? Thanks!
 
Personally i feel like screen protectors are overrated. By the time you want to sell it, likely it is worth $50-100, and a perfect screen wont change that too much.


Although, I tend to collect old devices to use as test phones, so my opinion is a bit biased :)
 
I have had multiple devices with the gorilla glass and have never used a screen protector. Not one of my screens has a scratch on it and I drop them multiple times a day.

I keep my last phone as a backup, so resale value isn't important to me.

My concern is that even a small scratch creates potential weakness, even in Gorilla Glass, for a future stress fracture. A screen protector doesn't hurt my phone, and I've been using them so long that the phone feels weird without one.

That said, I keep trying them on my iPad but pull them off, because the raised fold areas keep leaving weird discolorations in the protector. That's not an issue for my phones, though.
 
I buy an insurance policy with a new phone for $99 and stopped using a screen protector. (My two year old Bionic looks brand new.)

I guess I'm an "office worker" and the likely hood of scratching the screen is very low. With gorilla glass it would have to be very deliberate and very hard. I wonder if a screen protector would really make any difference at all over gorilla glass.

I have friends in the trades (carpenters, painters, electricians) and I recommend to them that they use a case and screen protector because of the high potential of them dropping it from a significant height. (The case also protects it from dust.)

If you use a phone for three days without a screen protector you will never want to use one again.

It does in my experience. As I said, I always put a protector on my phone. With my droid 3, which had a gorilla glass display (see http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/motorola/MOTOROLA-DROID-3 ), the first one I had on peeled, so I removed it and decided to try using the phone without one (because so many people insisted that they weren't necessary on gorilla glass). A month later, the display had two small scratches on it. That's when I ordered another protector.

(Note that if you follow the link to corning's gorilla glass web site it describes he gorilla glass as scratch resistant.)

I have read others say that it's not the glass that scratches, but the oleophobic (i.e., oil resistant) layer that scratches. I'm not sure myself, but I assume that it's the glass that scratches; that's what it looks like on my phone.
 
I ordered the screen protectors you can get on Moto's website and they are pretty darn good. With some, you can easily tell by look and touch that you have a screen protector on. This one is barely noticable.

I'll never go without a screen protector after an incidental contact with my wife's ring (seriously...phone was sitting by me in between wife and I and she reached for a pen or something in between us and barely brushed it) put a huge gash in my OG Droid's screen about a month after I bought it. I too thought Gorilla Glass was basically scratchproof. It's not.

Which version did you order from the Moto site? Looks like they have an non-glare, shock absorbing and brilliant screen film options. Thanks.
 
How are you guys using that original film on the phone? Mine was messing with the function of calling people and sensor that goes on and off when you hold the phone to your ear.

The screen would stay dark in a phone call unless I held the phone very flat. Otherwise it stays black. No one else has this issue with that film? I had to take it off.
 
I got a 3-pack of screen protectors by i-blason from amazon for 7.99 a couple weeks ago. I haven't checked the price lately. They are good quality and work well. Just follow the instructions and make sure there is not a speck of dust on the screen. Also picked up the i-blason clear silicone case for 9.99 at amazon. Great deal again. The cases on the Moto site are going for 29.99 I believe.
 
Be careful when putting on screen protectors to not cover the front facing microphone near the bottom of the screen. If covered, it can interfere with voice command recognition.
