The last AMEX card I had (it's been a while) covered accidental damage, too, I had a digital camera that a friend sat on and I had to send it in. I was out just the shipping costs. Perhaps that has changed with the advent of smartphones and their ease of damage.
Seems like it might just be worth having factory repair it for him at 150, since the OEM parts are almost that much anyway..
