I attempted to download the screen shots app.. but it is telling me that my phone is not rooted.. what is rooted and will it mess with my warenty

Rooting is opening up access to areas of your device that the manufacturer left closed to lessen the likelihood of user-caused problems.
Rooting does void the warranty, but it is possible to unroot the device for warranty or other reasons (uprades, etc).
There is info about rooting/unrooting the Motorola Droid 2 in the All Things Root sub-forum above this forum you posted in:

Have a look around in there, and in the threads with questions and answers about that, then you may find yourself wanting to root your D2.
