Screen stays black

It seems the latest update did something to the screen sensor. Sometimes when I talk on the phone, the screen will stay black when I take the phone away from my face. I've had exact same problem with my old Zmax phone when they released the final update.

is it my proximity sensor that's responsible for this? do proximity sensor calibration apps work?

Try the live chat support on ZTE site. I used to like using it but just used it just now and I don't think the people there knows what they are doing.
