Screen timeout while the lockscreen is on

I'm trying to extend the time it takes the screen to shut off when I get a notification while my phone is idle. I have no issue setting the screen timeout when the phone is active, currently set to 1 minute. But when the phone is idle, and I receive a text message or any other notification, the screen turns on for only about 3 seconds or so before shutting off. I find myself having to press the home button to power it back on. If I could extend it for only a couple more seconds it would be enough time for me to pull the phone out, see a snippet of the message received, then swipe the screen to get into it. As it is right now, pretty much every single time I receive a message and I pull out my phone, it only leaves me with about half a second to swipe the screen, most of the time i just miss it and the screen shuts off.

Is there any way I can extend the screen timeout for the lockscreen when it comes on automatically from notifications? Any apps that can do just that? Again, I'm not looking for a way to extend the time before the screen shuts off while the phone is active, I know for that I can go into settings. I'm looking for when it's idle and the screen is already shut off, and it comes on to show me the notification I received.
