screen timing out

hi there,
When I am talking on the phone, the screen blanks out after a certain time, I'm guessing to save battery, so when I have finished the call and go to press "end call" the screen is black.
So then I have to press the on button on the phone to see the "end call" button.
Does this always happen, or can I change it ?

Yes it does exactly that...

To end the call just hit the power button for the screen to light back up... or in the case of phones like my Droid X the screen will light up when the proximity sensor determines that the phone is no longer against your face.

What brand/model Android device do you have?
