Help Screen turns off while making a call with headphones

On the few occasions that I have to use the keypad to go through an automated system I use my headphones/earbuds so I can listen and push the right number on the keypad. However shortly after I get started the screen goes dark after a very short amount of time (less than 5 sec). So I have to turn the phone back on to answer every question. I cannot tell you how annoying this is. I did the proximity sensor test and that appeared to pass.

Does anyone have a solution for this? I've spent some time googling and found others that reported the problem, but no one that had a solution.
