Screwed Android Market After Rooting

Hi

I've rooted my phone yesterday because I wanted to uninstall a lot of system apps so my phone would run a bit faster. I googled about which ones I could uninstall safely, but I screwed my phone nevertheless.

Everytime I go to Android Market and try to download an app, I get the message "the transfer will start", but it never does. I guess it might have to do with the fact that I've uninstalled all Google apps from my phone and from what I'm beggining to realize after searching the net, they might be somehow connected with the market

I've tried downloading Gmail.apk to my PC, transferring it to my phone through the USB cable and install it with Astro File Manager, but I couldn't find one that would install.

What can I do? I don't even know if installing Gmail will do any good.

Installing Gmail won't help - I don't have it on my phone and market works fine.

It would help if we knew what you have removed, and what model phone you have. The device forum may be a good place to ask for advice.

Have you tried simple things like clearing /cache, or clearing data on the market app? I'm not convinced that the cause is approximately deletions.

If nothing else works you can get Google apps from http://goo.im/gapps. I'd take a nandroid before trying though, and it would have been good to do so before fiddling with system apps in the first place.

Hi Pax,

Which phone do you have exactly? You would probably have more answers if you post your question in the forum for your particular phone (preferrabely in the rooted section if there is one) as they tend to be more experts.

Before you rooted and started deleting your apps, have you performed an nandroid backup? If yes, then the best thing is to just flash that backup on your phone and your problem will probably be sorted. Same thing happened to me and so I flashed my back up and it worked.

If you don't have any back up I'm sure somewhere in this forum there will be a thread that contains the stock rom of your phone so you can flash it. The only thing it that it will perform a factory reset so will lose your data. So I suggest you back up any important data.

There might be a more simple way of fixing it but if there is, I don't know it (yet). Hope it helps

My phone's a Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro.

I've made no back up.

I've cleaned the cache on the Market and it didn't work.

I might be forgetting something, but I know I've removed almost everything from Google, the configuration guide, the chronometer, e-mail default application (I have maildroid), reloadsync, Timescape, and wisepilot.

I've dl Google Apps from Goo.im Downloads - Browsing gapps to my phone, but I can't install anything. I've done it through USB cable, I open the folder with astro and when I select the apps, there's no option to install. I've managed to install Google Talk from another source, but it won't run - won't even start. I'm almost certain that this problem with the Market has something to do with some Google element missing.

Do you have rom manager? With that what you could try is downloading the google apps and flashing them. Might work but can't guarantee.
When I flashed cyanogen, I had also flashed the google apps from the rom manager. Worked for me. All google related apps downloaded and market was working.

Wow... I'm a complete noob as far as mobile phones go. I'll try to decipher what you've just said through Google. I don't know what a rom is, and I don't know what's "flashing".

Right now I'm trying to control my urge to smash my phone with a hammer since Astro won't open apk files. Meaning, I can't install anything from the PC neither from the Market.

I'm f*cked ain't I?

I've logged in on Google Play on my PC and found out that I don't have any phone associated with my account anymore.

You would normally install a zip through the custom recovery that with most phones would be installed when you root. I don't know SE though, so I'd suggest visiting X10 Mini Pro - All Things Root - Android Forums (though that doesn't seem a very active forum). Try to check whether ROM Manager works OK on your phone model before considering using that - it causes problems on some phone models.

I meant clear the cache partition, which you can do from a custom recovery. And clear all data on market, rather than just the market cache. If the cache partition is full the market cannot download anything, with the symptom that downloads appear to start but then fail. You could perhaps test this by trying to download something very small.

No phone associated with the account is probably a symptom of your market woes. If the market app still loads, try clearing all data for it (through manage applications menu), then accept terms and conditions when you next load it, and I think that should fix the association.

If none of the above works, try installing the gapps through recovery. Put the zip on the sd card, enter recovery, select the install option. I can't be more specific as I don't know SE phones.

Worst comes to the worst, you are rooted so flashing a new ROM will fix this. But as you need to wipe the phone to do that, you should back up what you can first.

Oh, and as for Astro, do you have the option to install non-market apps enabled?

naaa you'll be fine :)
Hadron looks like he can help you better

but basically,
flashing = computer equivalent of installing
rom = computer equivalent of OS I would say
stock rom = original rom which came on your phone when you bought it

and like Hadron said, worst case scenario you can flash the stock rom and all will be fine

edit: Make sure you have clockworkmod recovery as well. You need that to flash anything whether it's a rom or a backup or gapps

Can you provide me a googd link?

I've managed to install a rom manager directly through my phone browser. That's the only way I can install anything on it.

you can download it from rom manager (Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it's only CM users is it?)
1. Open ROM manager
2. Go to download rom
3. go to google apps
4. I downloaded the file named 20110828 universal which worked for me. I have android 2.3.5. But if you have a different version, I think you should try the corresponding one.
5. Boot into recovery and flash the zip file.
6. restart phone
done!

Hi,

I've got Android version 2.1.

I've been trying to find a rom manager for my Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro and it was not an easy task. I finally found mini rom manager. However, it doesn't allow me to download google apps through it, it only has the option to download cyangenmod roms. I chose version 6, but the download never really starts and I'm stuck at 0%. Then, just for the sake of trying it, I've tried other versions and the download never rises above 0%.

So I went to the Cyanmodgen to try to download it from there, but they got the model version all messed up somehow and a lot of users are reporting their phone bricked. I haven't found any consensus on which version would be beneficial for my phone.

I just want to download Google Apps so my Android Market will start working again and I'm stuck for days, trying to download roms, rom managers, apk's and nothing seems to work...

Thanks

At this point I just want my phone to go back to what it used to be before rooting, roms, etc.

In my Mini Rom Manager I've the option "factory reset". Will this revert all the things I've uninstalled? I mean, will I have Google Apps again and Market working properly or will it not work all the same and I'll loose everything I've got in my phone without any benefit?

Thx for your help

You could have probably just reinstalled the android market (google play). You can just do a google search for the "google play apk 3.5.16" or which ever version I had to try 2 or 3 get it installed on the phone again. Then right back to installing apps!

I kept getting FCs on the market after installing Liberty ROM then nuking that for Steel Droid. I just did a factory reset after the ROM settled down and it fixed it.

I don't know if that'd work for everyone, but it's just another possible way to resolve the issue without having to scour the internet for APKs.
