Help SD Card access?

So I've been using this app for years, always having something running on my homepage. However I seem a tad stuck, when adding SD card storage widget it fails to display results simply saying "No slot".

This is down to the app not requesting access to the SD card so that I can grant it access. But how do I do this with a widget? I added the permission to the app itself, but that has no effect.

If I touch the SD card widget it takes me to the standard android storage display showing how much space I have.

Any ideas?

I was reading through the reviews in the play store and it looks like the developers are plagued with permission issues. Maybe this is one they didn't catch? The good news is they seem pretty responsive to bug reports.
