Help SD Card and SD CARD-ext file system?

Coming from a phone that had only a SD card, not the ext, and now the SDcard-ext is the actual sd card, how do I change default locations? For example, I noticed downloads are goin to the phon internal memory sd card partition, not the actual sd card. Meridian music player seems totally confused...

This is a little new for me too. Since I reloaded my apps onto the Razr from the market, it looks like I'm doubled up on some of the data and app files. I can delete a bunch of the ones on my sd-ext card, yes? And data files from my old T-bolt (HTC) SD card aren't seen by the Razr? For example... all my notes and ratings for Whisky Companion are g-g-g-gone.

Mr Mod... when do I graduate from "Junior Member" to "Member"?

Most apps allow you to rename the path to which they save. Might try that. You can also use a file manager to move files from sd (internal) to sd-ext (sd card) that way you know where they are, but unless you change the default save path for each app the new files will still be put in the sd (internal) folder. This is a confusing way of naming internal and external memory that android does however and it would be nice if they would name it appropriately to keep confusion down.

I believe that the external SD card (micro SD) is treated like a media storage. By design, the phone will only transfer media files (photos, music, documents, etc.) using the File App. You can always use a 3rd party app if you wish to transfer anything else. The internal SD card is used as the main "storage" for files. Apps are installed to the internal memory (non-SD card) and can be moved to the internal SD card using either a 3rd party app (Apps2SD, etc.) or natively (Settings/Applications/Manage Application and choose "Move to media area"). The "Media area" is the internal SD card. Apps do not install/move to the external SD card. Hope that this helps.

Probably subject for another thread, but this arrangement sucks with regard to motocast and media. Motocast doesn't check my media folders to see what music I have, and ends up dropping downloaded in some other directory, eating space up.

What is confusing me about this SDcard internal and SDCard-ext is that my Droid x and thunderbolt didn't have the external card named as SDcard-ext. it seems the Bionic does. i'd love nothing more the to figure out a way to change the name of the internal Sd card and then rename the SDcard-ext to just SD card. then all my files would be seen by all my apps.
anyone have any ideas?

I just started running out of space on my bionic and have come to see the issue - 'sdcard' vs 'sdcard-ext'. I agree, it seems like a bad solution that motoroloa has come up with to section a part of the internal memory off and call it 'sdcard'. I understand that there are performance enhancements and stability reasons to do this - but it defeats the whole purpose of storing things on a SDCard. I want to use my sdcard for external storage.

It would be nice if there was a way I could make my SD card be seen as 'sdcard' - like most apps expect it to be.

The naming of the true SD card as external was a terrible idea. It is patently untrue that most apps can have their path for save files set. At best most can be set to use the SD card for storage ... But that now means the internal SD as it has the name. Very few apps can actually be set to a specific path.

To get your files on your SD card (I also migrated from HTC) to behave properly and integrate with the apps again, you must copy the whole folder to the internal SD. Your apps will then read the files our settings. Of course your apps will behave as they expect the SD on any other phone to be external. Therefor, if you wish to transfer your settings from your RAZR to any other phone you will need to copy the contents of your "SD" to the external SD (where they should have been stored in the first place.

It's an unnecessary complication enforced to a bad policy by motorola. Naming conventions exist for a reason.

Just an FYI, its partitioned like that because of the future upgrade to ICS. Google wants to do away with the SD card slot and that's why the Xoom shipped without a working SD card slot and the last two Nexus devices have no SD card slot. As ICS uses the SD target for internal storage now the manufacturers had to implement the SD-EXT target. So this is a direct result of Google and not Motorola.

Thank you for that.

Makes much more sense now. Doing away with the SD slot is a terrible idea, esspecial as often as people upgrade phones nowadays. To be honest the non-removable battery was nearly a deal breaker for me, no SD slot would have been for sure.
