Help Sd card did not complete transfer

batman117

Lurker
I was trying to make some space on my phone so i decided to move some photos to my sd card. I selected about 500 photos in an album and transferred them to my sd card. It showed the message that the 500 photos were transferred. When I went to check the gallery to see the pictures most of the pictures were black with a little gallery icon and an exclamation point. Also there were only 200 files instead of 500. I tried a sd card rescan, i don't know if i did it wrong or something but it didn't work. What else can i try to recover my pictures

Where did you get the card from, and have you ever tested it (e.g. using h2testw, a PC app) to confirm it's real capacity?

A long running scam is to take a low-capacity card, hack it so it tells the device it's a high capacity card, then repackage it and sell it as a high capacity card. It all looks normal until you reach its real capacity, after which further files start overwriting older ones. It's why we tell people never to buy cards from eBay, for example, as the scam is so common. If it is that then I'm afraid there is nothing you can do.

If the card checks out as genuine then stick it in a card reader and see whether you can recover any files (Recuva is often recommended for PC users).

Yes I got it for $20. I didn't test it because all the testers for mac are difficult to run but I'm sure that the reason the photos disappeared. I learned never to buy cheap cards again haha thanks:'(. One more thing I have about 300 files in my lost.dir, which is about the amount of files i lost. It says that they're kind is unix executable files. Do you think that those might be the lost files and if they are can i recover them.

What remains of them. likely 1k or 2k in size, nothing recoverable. If Mac OS X can't identify a file type and it's just gibberish, it does assume it's a UNIX binary executable I think, but of course it's not.

FYI when I test a new SD with a Mac, I just try and fill it to it's stated capacity with movies or something, and if they all play OK, I assume it to be good and not a fake. Same thing with new USB flash drives as well. Especially so with being in China.
