Root SD card format results

I have a carrier's ROM on my Galaxy S, but I have fiddled with it quite a bit and flashed several custom ROM's onto the phone.
I want to empty my phone from any garbage it may have stored from undergoing these operations.
What happens if I use the "format SD card" from the settings menu?
Will I go back to my original carriers ROM without the root or the Speedmod kernel it currently has? or does the kernel and firmware stay as they are but everything else is lost?

I just don't want to lose my carriers ROM, as I have no way of downloading it.

I really appreciate your help guys!:)

formatting the SD card won't modify any of your system files. However, some of your apps that have files stored on your sdcard might not work properly after so make sure you have a backup of whatever files your think you might need. I personally wouldn't format my sdcard to get rid of the stuff on it, but I would delete the files manually myself by just opening the sdcard on the computer. Anyway, if you decide to do it your way you won't modify your Rom or kernel at all.

Formatting the SD card means formatting the internel SD card but not the /system partition. So it won't actually change the rom or uninstall any apps. But surely if you have flashed several roms, your carrier rom is long gone already.
