I put an sd card in my phone. It says its mounted, but I don't know what that means or how to work it?

Hi
Its like adding an external hard drive to a pc. It's gives an extra place to store data.
Most apps have in their settings the choice to store data to internal memory or to sd card sometimes called external storage or external sd. If you use a file manager you should see the sd card.
To use it it must be mounted. If you wish to remove it, unmount it first using the phones settings.
