Help SD card memory and access

I've had my phone for about 4 months now. Stupid as it may seem I can't seem to figure out how to view the contents of my SD card nor can I figure out why it says I only have 288mb of space left on it. I have not stored anything on it that I am aware of. I tried installing a few Apps to it but they all seem to be on my phone. I have no videos, songs, or games stored on the card. Whatever I download I transfer to my home PC (no internet at home). So what is the deal. I only have 10 pictures total on my phone. I only have about 12 Apps that did not come as presets on the phone. None of those. Are over 6mb each. What gives?
Any help would be appreciated.

select the menu where all your files and apps are placed. from there select "my files"... that is the sd card....
you can also use a usb cable and plug it into your PC and select "mass storage" vs "charging" ... you may have to turn debugging off to do this.settings > applications > development
