SD card password lock

On my Samsung Galaxy S2 I tried to set a password. Right now the "Set up SIM card lock" is unchecked. After two tries I gave up because it said if I enter the wrong password three times it would do something dire. I don't remember ever setting a password! I tried the two most obvious ones, but neither worked.

If I wait a few days and turn it off and on again, will I get two more tries? I don't want to try again if I have to do a factory reset. And if I would do a factory reset, does that mean all my contacts, apps I've added, etc. would disappear?

Thanks for any info or advice.
