SDcard-EXT & SDcard? Why two Paths?

1ok Stupid question time.

I came from the fascinate and Eris world (still live there too). But on the Droid 3, why are there two SD Card paths? Is one the internal 16GB path and the EXT path the true SD card? Learning new phones is quite fun.

Sdcard = internal space for app data and medai
Sdcard ext = media space

Since the sd card is hot swappable, this is nice if you have movies or something else loaded on extra cards. This way, pulling the card does not impact any apps.
