SE Xperia X8 and Android Newbie.

carlo0920

Newbie
good day to everyone!
i am new here in the forums and also new in this android thing.

i got my SE X8 5 days ago and been searching for some online help and advices and found myself in this site. :)

with 5 days of usage,
i got my first downloaded application yesterday by the name of TaskManager.
i was encouraged by the shop where i bought my phone to download it.
they say it will help me reduce lags and battery drain.

but i got this problem.
when i open the TaskManager, several apps are running.
Camera
Market
Support
Messaging
Timescape
Postcard
Backup and restore

i am only using Messaging so i decided to kill all the task except it.
after killing them, my signal turns down and a SIM card symbol appears on the side of the signal indicator.
also, when i press Back button, only have 1 icon left. the SIMcard toolkit.

the icons and signal apparently appears after 1.5-2 seconds.
can somebody help me with this??
i maybe appear some kind of a paranoid. :D
but please understand.
i am a NEWBIE. lol.
THANKS!

@carlo0920 , welcome to xperia X8 users forum.

BTW, as you would know by now that SE has officially informed that there will not be any upgrades to the software that is currently running in Xperia X8.

You would be having 2.1.1 on your phone ( check it in settings - about phone - android version )

We own a piece of good hardware that could clock more but have been left orphan with the 2.1.1 stock software.

Ok there are ennumber of articles about the limitations of 2.1.1 ( just read them and get to understand )

Coming to your issue, i believe you tired to kill the default process that is needed to get the network signal of the phone.
just check the task killer settings and avoid killing the process/application that is of the Sony's .

Try the advanced task killer free app which is wonderful and does the job smartly without affecting any system processes.

Another useful app is BatterDr to show you the battery status.

@sunsril:
thank you very much for your reply! :)
i tried killing task one by one.
the result is,
when i kill the Backup and restore,
the signal is turning down.
can i ask now,
won't it that harm the phone?
that accidentally killing the default process that is needed to get the network signal of the phone?

thank you!
i will try Task Killer and Battery Dr when i go downloading again. :)

i use Go laucher EX, its a good launcher with task killing capabilities.. with that, i could lock the Backup and restore icon so that it wont close down when i kill all running apps..
btw i dont think it harms your phone in anyway..

@tanabe:
thanks!
that reply gives me a sigh of relief. :)
i am really new to this thing so everytime a thing happen,
it's like i always get paranoid thinking that my phone might be defective or what. lol

can i ask what % of battery it will shut down after or during a call??
my girl called me this evening and my battery is at 15%.
the phone shut down and when i turned it on,
the battery is at 11%.
i don't know what happened because when she called me again,
i can't even answer the call but this time, the phone just restarted.
can you guys tell me what's happening?

no problem! glad to help, i was paranoid too at first :D

your battery issue is abit weird, i could browse the net via wifi for about 30 minutes with 15% battery.. after 30 minutes it drops to about 5% or lower.. i never had phone restart problems before, sorry i dunno..

i think my paranoia strikes again with that statement. :D
but, that is the only time that my phone restarts.
i was observing my phone yesterday and it didn't restart anymore.
i don't know what to think now but i guess i gotta stop worrying because as of now,
the phone is OK.
and that's what is important. :)

can i ask you guys,
how many hours do you charge your phones??

my initial charging was 4 hours as per the sales agent told me to do so.
i have charged my phone thrice after that initial charging.
twice without my Battery Dr, my charging time is 2 hrs.
once with Battery Dr,
it is stated that my phone is fully charged at 1 hour and 29 minutes.

and my battery is lasting 24-30 hours.
BTW, i am charging my phone with 15-10% left on the battery life. :)

that's quite good battery life, as for me i usually charge it at 5-10% and it will get full in a few hours..
BUT there are times when i drain out the battery on purpose, charging it only when it reaches 2-3% and what i noticed is that it takes VERY long to fully-charge, sometimes up to 10 hours before being fully-charged but it will last longer, about 4-5 hours more than my usual battery life..

hey!
can i ask.
well, tanabe and i are the only ones talking in here. :)
tanabe!
can i ask. (a very nonsense question. lol)

what key do you press before unlocking your phone to the touch slide?
the POWER button or the HOME button?

i usually use the HOME button,
but after watching some videos on youtube,
i notice all of them are using the power button.
makes me think that i might be doing wrong by using the home button?

there are no 'nonsense questions' if you ask me bro..

it works both ways, i usually use the home key which is easier to press and slide the screen.. i only use the power button for locking the phone..

btw did you root your phone already?

wow!
thanks for the brotherly love. :D
and thanks for the answer also. :)

i really want to root my phone now,
but i am afraid that i might not do it right and eventually brick my phone.
haha,
my warranty will be voided if i do rooting right?

i am studying all of those stuffs starting from rooting to upgrading android,,
so that i won't worry anymore by the time that i will do it. ;)

maybe a month or two i can do some upgrading. lol.

no prob bro, this side of the forum is kinda quiet these days..

i dont think rooting will brick your phone but it might void your warranty but you can always unroot your phone with one click :)

p/s: i rooted my phone, and i dropped it causing the speaker to malfunction.. sent it for a warranty repair and they didn't even check the software.. they just tested the speaker, and since its not functioning, they took it for a warranty claim :) but of course this depends on your retailer..

i really wanna do the upgrade of Cyanogen Froyo 2.2. :)
i have watched the tutorial to do it.
but my warranty is really keeping me to do so. :D

i have learned how to root, but i still don't know how to unroot. :)
a little more knowledge and i think i can do it.

so that i won't worry bout my warranty anymore.
and hope that we have the same retailer's mind. lol

im still using stock rom, only using go!launcher.. its good enough for me at the moment hehehe..

if im not mistaken, superoneclick has an unroot option, try and check it out.. the power of an unrooted phone is endless! :D

just installed go launcher ex in my phone. :D
now i see a new world in it.

i think it is good for me also at the moment. :)

hey!
may i just ask,
is it a must to turn on USB debugging when we connect our phone to PC??
or is it just when you are rooting?

i plugged my phone to my PC to put songs on my SD,
i didn't turn on the USB debugging and now it bothers me.. :D

great! then you can try out the different effects on it, looks cool and doesnt lag, thats why i love it.. i prefer this than using custom roms..

you dont have to activate USB debugging to transfer files, you only need to activate it if youre doing something 'serious' to your phone, like rooting or using it as a USB webcam.. otherwise you dont have to activate USB debug..

but just so you know, i leave it in 'on', makes no difference actually and its easy when i wanna use my USB webcam app..

p/s: USB webcam is available on android market :)

yeah!
effects are cool.

and i'll admit,
the reason why i want to upgrade to custom ROMS is because i thought that the icon arrangements, widget and effects are because of the upgrade.
have no idea about the "launchers". lol
thanks to you and google. :D

and thanks for your answer bout debugging.
another sigh of relief. :)
