"Search Nearby" on Google Maps

So, I've used Google Maps to find my destination. Had a look at the road map and the satellite photo. Now, it's time to find the nearby gas station/hotel/restaurant/grocery store/whatever.

When I touch the pushpin icon to search, it searches near where I am NOW, not near the address on the map.

How do I get it to search around the address on the map?

(So easy to do this on MapQuest on the PC, by the way)

I usually just hit the gps icon that centers the map to your current gps location before searching and that seems to work

Uh, that's what I'm saying. I DON'T want to search at my current location. I want to search at the location I found on the map, somewhere else.

But it wants to search where I am.

After you find a location on the map, tap on it's label. A screen will come up and now tap on the 4th icon which looks like an upside down triangle with a circle around it. This gives you "More Options". Now select "Search Nearby". Unfortunately, you don't get the pre-defined categories like with the pushpin but you can manually enter whatever you want. Hope that helps.

I think the problem is he can't FIND any locations on the map. He just wants to, say, find a gas station ten miles up.

Offhand I don't know of any way to do this without having at least some sort of destination in mind (cross streets or something to search for)... but now I'm intrigued and am going to play around with google maps until I find it. There's gotta be something there...

Bam. Got it. Okay, so once you find an area on the map you want to search for, long-press (press and hold your finger in one spot) on the area you want. It'll show an address for the location you pressed. Click it on the map to get details, and you'll have the option to "search nearby."

There ya go.

By the by, I tried it out by searching for "Gas" in Jersey City, and anytime I moved the map, it'd bring up new results for Gas wherever the map was.

Hope that helps.

OP could also just google for "gas stations" and the zipcode for wherever the area is that you want results from
