Motorola droid with firmware 2.0.1.
About once a day the standard google search widget breaks for me. The symptoms are:
1. The widget itself jumps up a little to become flush right under the notification bar.
2. The virtual keyboard that pops up isn't the one with the magnifying glass in the corner, but it's the one with the "enter" arrow.
3. Typed-in search terms are obscured underneath the greyed out "Google" that's in the search bar.
4. Trying to actually search by hitting the enter button or the magnifying glass in the widget itself does nothing.
5. Trying to remove the widget when it's in this state results in a forced close.
Just now I resolved the problem by opening the physical keyboard. That seems to have kicked the widget out of its funky state, even after closing the physical keyboard.
