Searching Email and Sorting Contacts

So I upgraded my Xperia X10 to Gingerbread today.....

I've got a couple of questions that I cannot figure out and are driving me absolutely NUTS!!!

I have a Exchange account that is set up for work, and its done through the Exchange email app that comes with Gingerbread. I also have Gmail

Here are my questions:

1. My contacts come from my Exchange account. Why can't I sort them by LAST NAME???? That actually worked in 2.1 but seems to be broken in 2.3??

2. I cannot figure out how to search for Email in my exchange email. Anybody have a clue how to do this?

3. Why are there separate apps for Exchange/Other (POP) email and Gmail? It makes having a combined inbox impossible. In fact, I actually don't get my Gmail throught the GMail app, I have it set up as Exchange so I can see everything on one inbox.

The previaling answer to these seems to be to go and spend $20 on another app. That's silly! I would think that Android should at least be able to match what year-old iPhone software can do (unified inbox, search email, change contact sorting).

I hope these are just items I cannot figure out and someone has an answer.

Thanks!
