What's a good safe private option for uploading stuff to save such as photos? I don't really trust the big guys.

Use something like Amazon web services... And encrypt all your data securely before you upload it.

Your encryption is your protection...

If you're averse to services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive you can always build your own. Take a look at Syncthing or Nextcloud, both are Open Source projects so there's no corporate oversight. For any roll-your-own solution just keep in mind you're going to be supplying some kind of storage media, either your own drive(s) at home working as a server or online using a service like DigitalOcean.

The automated convenience of services like Dropbox are tempting though. You might want to stick with one of those 'big guys' and just encrypt whatever you're storing online. VeraCrypt is a really good option. Both Apple and Microsoft have their own proprietary disk encryption, but they're also limited to their own operating systems. VeraCrypt is a more universal solution:

You might also want to look into SpiderOak. Similar to Dropbox and all your interactions with it are encrypted. And unlike Dropbox, they don't keep any of the encryption keys and there are no back-doors. If you forget your password with Dropbox it's an arduous process but you can eventually get your access to your data, with SpiderOak if you forget your password there's no option.

If you have an Western Digital hard drive, it might be capable of using LiveDrive. Basically the harddrive is capable of acting as your own personal cloud server as long as it's connected to the internet. Just check the manual if yours is LD capable.
