Security / antivirus

I was offered halfprice Norton instore, but haven't had good experiences with it before.

which protection software have people installed (if any) on their N7?

The best thing to use is that thing between your ears. Don't install crap apps and you won't have any problems. Actually read the description and the feedback. Look at the ratings and how many installs it has.

well, norton for pc is supposedly a resource hog, i would not get it for a tablet. I like kaspersky for pc, but had not thought about AF for tablet. does anything think it is necessary?

Apps aren't given the same kind of scanning permissions inside the tablet that they are on a desktop.

Antivirus apps are extremely effective on a desktop because admin apps on a desktop have access to every single bit that passes through memory on its way to the CPU. Additionally, PCs have the horsepower to actually scan all of those bits without significantly slowing down the system.

That's not the case in the tablet world. I would not use antivirus, and instead only install known, trusted applications.

If you read the thread I linked you pretty much understand how to stay safe plus there is new functionality in JB that makes it nearly impossible for malware to take over your device. The long and short of it is:
  • Only get apps straight from devs or known markets (Play, Amazon, GetJar, etc.)
  • Pay attention to permissions - a solitaire app doesn't need access to your contacts generally speaking
  • Don't use pirated apps or content
