Security Apps

Hi,
First of all I was wondering if people think that security apps are needed right now. If so, what apps do people recommend. I am looking for a security app that covers any threats that there might be, but uses as little of the phones resources as possible. Any advice will be very welcome.

The best security for your phone is you. Before you download an app you have to accept the permissions, make sure those make sense for the app. Does a wallpaper app need access to my contacts? Probably not. Does an email app need access to the internet and my contact? Yes. Market comments are your friend, also check to see how any times the app has been downloaded. The problem with security apps is they have never proven to do anything, as long as you accept the permissions the app will not flag anything. The apps that were removed from the market recently were not flagged by a security app. If you are really wanting to protect your phone root it and install superuser, that way if an app tries to get root access you will be warned. Otherwise, just check the permissions make sure they seem reasonable with what the app is supposed to do. Check market comments. You can also check on forums such as these to see if anyone has reported anything wrong with the app.

Thanks for the reply. That is exactly what I have been doing. I did try out Lookout, but it slowed the system to a point that I uninstalled it as I didn't think the lag was worth the supposed advantage. If that is the case, I will carry on as I am now.

Lookout works for me too, but there are other alternatives if you want.
For example, Wheres My Droid, Track and Protect, Seek Droid, Lost Phone, GPS Tracker, etc...

NetQin Antivirus is also good, aside from the antivirus it also has anti-theft features...been using this since my Nokia days and proven its effectiveness...]

Any advantage to paying for Lookout? I had the free trial but on the fence for paying for the extra features.

I started out with Lookout free version and upgraded to the pro version. I wanted the backup capability and additional security enhancements. It was worth it.

There is no substitute for common sense. I have been using Android since the g1 was released, I've been using Linux on my desktop for ten years, I don't have a single security app installed and I've never had any problems.

Android app developers caught napping on SSL security

More than 1,000 legitimate Android apps contain SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) weaknesses, leaving them vulnerable to Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks, researchers have claimed.
