Root Security of rooting, etc

drooh

Lurker
Hope this is not a silly set of questions

1) How secure is rooting your phone? If I use my wells fargo app on a rooted phone how do I know I'm safe?

2) From what I understand in the instructions on this forum, if I root, I dont necessarily need to erase my phone, at the very least it just "flips a switch" to allow me to install different aps like wifi tether.

3) I saw someone say that getting free wifi tether is sort of like stealing cable, and now sprint is upping their rate by $10 for all smart phones, makes me wonder if all the rooting for free wifi inspired this.

Welcome to the forums and they are not silly questions:

1. Rooting your phone does not make it less secure. Knowingly installing apps that you get from questionable sources or from warez sites could compromise your phone.

2. To root your phone either you have to use RSD to flash an alternate recovery or you can run a program called rageagainstthecage that uses a software exploit to get root (soup for root, super one click, etc). These methods grant you "root"access to your phone.

3. Using wifi tether is a violation of your Terms of Service (ToS) that you agreed to when you signed your contract. That said whether you think it is right or wrong is a ethical choice left up to you.

Some will say it is stealing, some will say you pay for unlimited data so you should be able to do it. The arguments can become legendary in some posts. I am not advising you either way only answering your question :D (yes it is a very political answer).
