Security & Phone Tracking apps

Hi guys.

I have McAfee WaveSecure on seven days trial, with five days currently remaining. I've been searching info about this app and, unless there have been recent improvements, it seems that WaveSecure is not all that secure in that:

  1. It announces itself
  2. It's locked state can be bypassed
  3. It can be easily uninstalled.
  4. There seems to be some doubts about its location reporting ability.
I've seen recommendations for:

  • Lookout
  • InstaMapper
  • SeekDroid
Would very much appreciate comments from any uses of WaveSecure or any other apps designed for the same purpose.

I can't really afford a high price or a monthly bill.

Plan B is an after you lost the phone solution (without location software installed) and not a security solution.

Honestly it mostly depends on what features you want and what you can afford.

Well, since my original post I have tried several possibilities.

Lookout seemed promising, but it bought my Ideos U8150 to its knees. So slow it became practically unusable. After a bit of research I found that the lot of people reported the same problem. Uninstalled it and everything went back to normal.

Eventually I discovered an app called Cerberus (www.cerberusapp.com) which seems to have it all, and so far no downside.

Would definitely suggest you take a look at it, and no matter what you're using now.

EDIT:
The URL I quoted above doesn't give much information on the app features. Better to check out its listing in the Android Market.

SeekDroid works great for me.

Thanks. I'm quite happy with Cerberus for now but I'll tuck SeekDroid away for future reference.

One feature that WaveSecure offered that neither Cerberus or SeekDroid have is backup.

Any suggestions from anyone for a good, flexible and reliable Android backup app?

titanium backup

Do any of these work on a wifi only tablet? I just tried Zoner and says locate function won't work without a cell radio.

I use Find My Droid and it works for me.
You can also use Google Latitude if you set it up right and its also free.
You can sign into htc sense also and it has several options like lock your phone, erase data, make device ring etc.But i haven't tested this method yet.Its Beta right now but looks promising. Also shows location of the phone.

As far as security i have never really tried and security apps or programs.

I done a test with my wifes phone using google latitude and it tracked her position automatically throughout the whole day.And updated every 5 to 15 minutes and was fairly accurate.

No, not rooted. I am new to Android and SmartPhones, so haven't been getting too adventurous yet.

I understand there are apps you can use to root the phone, is that correct?

Any downside to rooting?

Any dangers?

Excuse me?
What language would that be in?
Plan B's premier purpose is to secure your phone when it is lost or stolen. That makes Plan B a bonafide security solution.
