"See thru" Icons

Hey fellow Hero owners.
I want to make contact icons like the earphones icon in this picture (I borrowed the image from another thread) with a transparent background. So far I've managed to make a .png image on gimp. but when I load it into the Hero the transparent backgrond turns black.
So my question is, what type of file are those icon images?

those are png's.

Are you using the "icons" on your contacts? Maybe the application does not support it...
