Help Select without opening

Have had my GA for a month or so now but haven't yet figured out how I might select an item, either in calendar (agenda view) or say contacts. There are occasions when I would like to select a contact or a calendar event without actually opening it and I just don't see how to do that without an arrow up/down which I had on my previous phone which had a hard keyboard.
Would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

why do u want to select if u don't want want to open it?
if u want to open an options menu for it u need to tap and hold it for 1 second.
