My friend has a HTC Hero and can send his location through text message, is there any way to do this with a Nexus one?

yes. through google map. you'll need the latest google map version

locate your position with the GPS.
click your position.
a bubble will pop up on that location, click it
it'll direct you to a new window
click "share this position"
