Sensation from Orange without Orange stuff?

Hi folks,

On the verge of taking the plunge with a Sensation, and want to stay with Orange, but having seen the amount of crap loaded onto the Orange Sensation I am not so sure. As well as the usual one or two apps, we have Orange Wednesdays, Orange Mail, probably some others as well, and some stupid game demos that want you to pay for them!

If you buy a laptop with all this crap on you can delete them at least, but it seems the only way around it is rooting which as I understand it is not possible as yet.

So, is there a way of getting one on Orange without all the branding? I have been told that buying one from Carphone Warehouse on Orange will mean I get an unbranded phone - is that true?

Had mine direct from Orange and yes it's full of Orange crap.

My son has one coming tomorrow from Carphone Warehouse, so i'll let you know.

Just done a bit more research - seems that Phones2U upgrades are Orange branded phones. Does anybody know whether mobiles.co.uk (linked the Carphone Warehouse) sell branded or unbranded phones?

Yep, My son's from Carphone Warehouse is clean of the orange crap and it worked out a lot cheeper to upgrade with them rather than Orange.

i have my phone from orange, its the following crap.

orange back up - handy
app shop
games
tetris
maps
orange plus

that been said, i never seem to understand why so many people moan about it, and the level at which they moan.

there, there. you cant get rid of them, but...you have 6 home screens, i cant even remember the last time i went to the main menu, nor now can i think of a reason why i would in the future.

people say there are taking up valuable space, there is a Gig on the phone and it comes with and 8gb card ( i personally have a 16gb card in )

every app i have downloaded so far can be saved to the sd card or moved there in the app setings.

you only know they are there if you go into the main menu. I have a few friends who are "completly disgusted" as if it were a fringe on there human right and that their memory is running low, but then you look at the crap they have downloaded and all the things they are trying to run, and it become quite clear that the 6 orange apps on their phone are the least of their troubles

That been said just the principle of them been there and knowing they are "unremovable" is the most annoying thing.

mobiles.co.uk sell unbranded/unlocked phones, I have had one from them.

I am new to the Sensation. I have never seen an option to choose where the app will be saved when I have downloaded it. Have I done something wrong or are they automatically saved on the SD card? And I can't find any setting in my apps to actually save on the SD card. Is there a setting somewhere in Android I have to choose to make all this happen please?

Sorry if it offends anybody's sensibilities, but I would prefer the phone as HTC intended. It is the game demos that really annoy - by all means have them on an accompanying CD, or downloadable for Orange customers, but for those of us who like clean tidy menus it is a mess before you even start.

Poor show from Orange if you ask me.

I think I am going to end up getting one through Orange though, all the mobile.co.uk and CW deals seem to be new customers only and not that great. My wife got a better deal than that just talking to Orange CS for 5 mins...

To be honest I would be well happy with 600mins/300texts/500MB data on a 24mo contract for

You are correct, those are the deals quoted on the website. However, when upgrading, speaking to the retentions department often results in a much better deal because they really do want to keep your custom.

Yes, done this before (although never seem to get the incredible deals that most people seem to get). Or are you saying that if you ring that particular website you can get a better deal through them?

The upgrade deal I got was direct from Orange's retentions, and was much better than I could get from the internet resellers. My original deal 2 years ago (on Orange) was from mobiles.co.uk, but when they contacted me regarding upgrading recently, they couldn't get anywhere near what I got from Orange for the Sensation.

Good to know, thanks. Just hate the stupid dance you have to do everytime (ooh, I'm thinking of leaving, let us pass you to our retentions dept sir) - it's worse than car insurance!

True, but it seems to be the way of the world. By the way, with Orange, the automated menus take you straight to retentions nowadays, if you take the correct route that is!

Which is...? :)

Just follow the mobile phone choices until you get the option which says "if you are thinking of leaving" This then takes you to an advisor in retentions. Martin Lewis's money saving expert website has good advice on this.

You may need to be in the upgrade eligible period before this option is enabled (last 3 months on a 24 month contract)

It is entirely possible you can get from Orange without all the Orange bloatware, my Desire HD was bought in an Orange shop and was completely unbranded.

This may be the case with a few phones, but the vast majority that come from a network will be locked and branded. Whilst they may not be obviously branded, chances are when you look at the software/build numbers they will still vary slightly from the unbranded/unlocked units

No, sorry you cant with the phones as they are, they are easily moved over to the sd card in the application settings.

There are apps in the android market that can do this for you such as apps 2 sd and the one that I use, MoveApps.
