Help Sensation XE 4 GB ROM: 1 GB user available?

Lanod

Lurker
Does anyone know why the Sensation XE claims to have 4 GB of ROM but only makes 1 GB user available?

Where is the other 3GB?

System is what, 200MB max?

(just got one of these btw, painful to have to use the Sense launcher again but the rest is very nice)

It had 4GB internal memory, with 1GB for users. It's never claimed to have 4GB available for users. A new ROM, compressed, is (roughly) 385MB. The /system partition is 800MB decompressed

It just seems a bit odd putting 4gig in there and only making 1gig available to the user. Why would they bother using a 4 gig chip, perhaps they ran out of 1gig chips?

EddyOS, thanks for the info re system partition. That leaves 2Gb, or thereabouts, that appears to be unused.

Does anyone know what this 2Gb is doing?

possibly for future development?

I was wondering if it was an ICS thing.

It just seems strange - the first specs I read said 4Gb ROM. No mention of limitations on what was available to users.

Does anyone know if there are there any other phones that have unavailable ROM like this?

The /system partition isn't the only one using the internal memory. There are other factors to take into account. Storage of the bootloader, radio image, etc. It all adds up. Perhaps not to the full 3GB but pretty close

I'm not sure if that's the case though, as the standard Sensation only has 1 gig memory and they're essentially using the same software.

that's just a difference in the way they present the specs - the original sensation also has a 4 gig chip, (about) 1 gig of which is user accessible

Thanks, that's interesting. Where did you find the info?

can't remember where i dig up the info on the chip (other than "goolge"), but when i got my sensation, i noticed i had a gig free on the internal memory, so obviously the chip had to be bigger

Coming from Windows mobile (HTC HD2) seams to odd to only have 1gb for internal memory (application storage) since you cant run services from SD

16G are pretty waste , useful only if you use your phone as an mp3 player or camera replacement ....
