Sense Mail vs. native Gmail

I took this from another thread over in Applications, but figured I would post here since we're all Eris users.

I use the Gmail app for actually retrieving, reading and writing, mainly because it supports push rather than pull so I get instant notifications of new mail and it doesn't have to keep checking for mail every x minutes. I still use the HTC Mail app as well and set it to sync twice a day in order to get the mails into the people app as this does not work with the Gmail app.

That's an awesome idea. People, IMO, is a great app. Mail kind of sucks . . .

Here's my dilemma, I really like how Mail will give me that nice green circle on the Shortcut that will show me how many unread emails I'm dealing with. I fooled around by replacing the Mail Shortcut with the Gmail Shortcut and there's no Notification, except in the Status Bar. Is there a Setting I'm missing or does the native Gmail app lack this? Do you know of a 1x1 widget that might help, by chance?

If someone has a nice solution I'm missing out on, please chime in--any help is appreciated!

I want to rip this .apk apart though . . .

It highlights the icon in orange when you press on it--annoying when everything else I have is Sense Green.
