Sense UI

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not fully understanding Sense UI. I've been reading a lot about it on the forums, but mainly it's people loving it, or people hating it.

What makes Sense UI so relevant, or not relevant? What exactly is it?

Again, pardon the ignorance in this question, I am new to the whole android thing, and I'm patiently waiting for VZW to get the Nexus One... or Incredible... decisions, haha, sigh.

Sense UI is HTC's home theme/replacement for their phones built on Android.

It makes Android look better. It also adds some options that aren't available to Vanilla Android. Overall it just makes the phone more polished.
