Help Separate ringtone & notifications volume controls?

So I finally updated to marshmallow on my Verizon HTC One M8 and it turns out that Google made the mind-boggling decision of linking the volume controls for ringtone and notifications. I can't understate how absurd this is. Does anyone know if there is a way to de-link these without root, or is root required?

Try Persist app from the playstore. Has separate volumes

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't like how it requires full network/location access, though. I understand that it's needed for the location-based features, but that's gimmicky to me. I don't understand why devs tend to bloat their apps with all of these extras; most of them don't seem to see value in simplicity. I just need to de-link the ringer and notifications volume controls. That's it.
