Separate tones for email and texts?

I have managed to input a custom ringtone for incoming calls plus a separate short tone for 'Notifications' BUT this short tone sounds for both incoming email and texts. Texts are fine but emails from GMail include all the advertising dross and can arrive at any time of day and night and I don't want to be bothered by them. Is there any way I can separate the text notifications from the email ones so that I can have audible alerts of texts but not of email?

Hello there and good morning. Yes you can turn the notification sounds off for Gmail in the settings of the Gmail application. Just click the drop down menu and scroll to the bottom until you see Settings . Select settings then click on your email address and you will see the settings for Notifications. Once in the notification settings you can turn off the sound, change the tone or select to only get notifications for certain labels

Thanks biggdogg, that looks like sorting it. The path was slightly different: once into the GMail account, I had to select 'Labels to notify' from within Notification settings and then under 'Inbox' I found options to display incoming mail in status bar, the required option for Ringtone (which I set to 'Silent'), a 'Vibrate' option ('Never') and 'Notify once' on/off.
My old LG-P970 is still on v2.2.2 ('Froyo') and I guess there will always be detail differences but your tips took me to what I need, so many thanks.
