IF you could root it, you could have a 32GB SD card formatted via GPArted ir similar as:
Partition 1 - 4GB EXT4, Partition 2 22GB Fat32, Partiton 3 - 4GB Linux swap and a bit unused at ente end.
Then install Int2Ext4+, give it root access and you've effectively got 4GB instead of 512Mb.
Oh, and it needs to be a class 10 card.
I did this on an HTC Wildfire S, which officially stopped on Gingerbread, and had (CM) KitKat 4.4 running well on it. NOTE: KitKat 4.4 is as new as you can get if your phone is an ARM6 device. All newer versions of Android require at least an ARM7 processor.
