Is there anyway to set the SMS alert to be different for sperate contacts. For example I want different ringtones when I get a text from my friends and parents.

It replaces the stock messaging program and has exactly the functionality you are looking for. The customized notifications allow you to specify ringtones, vibration patterns, and LED colors on a per-contact basis.
The options also allow you to customize how the conversations look and if you want to have the "quick" messaging ability.

Well then what are you looking for? Handcent allows you to assign a specific notification sound for each contact. Isn't that what you said you wanted?
