I have Android version 2.3.6 (Gingerbread). A co-worker has the same phone, but he has "Ice Cream Sandwich". He was attempting to demonstrate the NFC feature, but the way to get to this feature on his phone is not the same as on my phone. In fact, he couldn't find it on my phone.

I downloaded the owner's manual, but some of the icons it tells you to tap on in order to get to NFC aren't present on my phone, at least not where they should be per the manual. IOW, the instructions don't always match what you actually need to do to get to a certain feature.

Could it be because I have Gingerbread and he has Ice Cream Sandwich? And, should I upgrade my phone? I have read a few stories of people who upgraded that want to go back to Gingerbread because of issues with newer versions.

Any help is appreciated.

hi,

i think the first thing you need to divulge in here is the carrier/model number of your phone as only AT&T versions of the phone in the US (as far as im aware) have NFC.
If your version of the note does not have the NFC capabilities then no upgrades will provide you with it.

Hello,

The carrier is AT&T, and the model number is SGH-I717.

I don't care that much about the NFC capability, I was using this as an example of the fact that the menu structure on my phone was slightly different than that of my co-worker's phone, and I was wondering why that would be.

hi,
the model your refering to does (or should have) NFC, with regards to menu, yes ics menu system is quite a lot different to gingerbread, this is to accomodate the many many different functions the note can perform on ICS that is not available on GB. as to wether you wish to upgrade, only you can make that choice, i personally wasn't going to but after a few drinks one night i did accidentally, i played with ICS then downgraded back to GB to compare......needless to say i am back on full upto date ICS and the only issue i have ever had is battery drain.

hope this helps

regards

Baz

Menu structure will definitely be ICS over Gingerbread. I find the new structure to be a lot more intuitive.

I have heard lots of people going back but I think there are many other issues than the version that have cause their problems.

In the end you won't know if the upgrade will cause you problems until you do it.

I've had none asside from a few applications started occasionally crashing but I blame them for incompatibility rather than my OS version.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

The only issue I have with the Galaxy Note (so far) is the battery life; it drops like a rock whenever I'm using anything on it. Right now I'm down to 75% left after 4 hours being off of the charger (Power save is ON). I am wondering if upgrading to ICS would help or hurt this. I've read stories of people switching back to GB because of how they hate ICS.
