Help Settings/Privacy/Back up my data

DroidRick

Is this a new setting in Froyo 2.2?

How does it work?

It says Back up current settings and application data.
That's exactly what I want to do now.

Where will this data be stored exactly?

Does the backup take place as soon as you check the box or at another time?
Has anyone used this feature and have experience with it backing up and restoring?
TIA

I haven't used it yet but my guess is that it will back up your settings and application data to your sd card which is usefull when you upgrade or factory reset.
Just my guess so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks GG.
I hope someone else can chime in with this.

I have an SD card that I can pop in to use if that is what is needed.

I don't want to root my phone and from what I've read, MyBackup Pro and
Titanium Back-up are really the only two apps that people use for backup now.

For Titanium I believe you need to root your machine (I have many apps with data that need to be backed up). MyBackup I'm not sure.

So if this built-in backup actually works, I'd jump for it.
I want to reset my phone now but not before backing up all the data.

I'm not sure it backs up to a sd card, it could be backed up to Google server.

I can't seem to find this Settings>Privacy and as such, can't find the Backup. I remember I saw the Privacy yesterday but it's gone today. Weird!

I have Build XWJPA now and it's there. I don't know if it was there with Eclair?

I am not sure if 2.1 has it. But 2.2 has it definitely as even the "How to" section in the HTC site (I am using HTC Legend) has it. I know I saw it yesterday after I had just upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 over-the-air.

Due to some stupid issues with the upgrade, I need to do a hard reset but before that I need to back up my phone. And now, I can't find Privacy under Settings at all which will back up all my MMS, SMS, d/l apps, customisation in terms of wallpaper etc. I am not sure what and where went wrong.

Driving me nuts just to do a backup. Not sure if d/l apps for Backup will work.

I called up the HTC helpline and they were of totally no help.

In the end, I d/l My Backup (free version) and backup-ed my whole phone before I did a factory reset.

I still can't find the "Privacy" under "Settings" after the factory reset.

Well I don't know what the setting is all about. I hope others who have figured it out can pipe in here.
I turned it on, inserted my SD card (as if that would make a difference)
and even connected via wifi to see if that would trigger anything.

Still don't know:
a) how to get it started
b) where the files are backed up to
c) how to start a restore

I checked out my colleague's HTC Desire which had Froyo preinstalled when he bought it a month ago. No "Privacy" under "Settings" too.

Not sure what's happening with your phone but it's on mine with Froyo 2.2.
Here's a Youtube video describing it for the Galaxy Tab (which also uses Froyo 2.2).

The thing is, it's still not clear at all how to get this feature to run when you want it to and how to restore, when you want it to.
