A while back I accidentally got myself stuck on some outlandish firmware through a botched reg hack. As a result, Kies does not believe there are any updates available for my phone model (I'm still on 2.1.1)
Today I decided I'd grasp the nettle, root the phone and update it myself.
Root went fine, that's all done.
I've been trying to update the firmware with boot manager.
After I first installed it, I flashed the recovery rom.
Q1) SOLVED - What exactly IS that? Am I correct in thinking that it sits before the operating system as a safety net in case a rom fails? So if the Rom doesn't install properly but has corrupted your old OS then it will still be available to install a backup or an alternative Rom? Found this explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734166
So after I flashed the recovery rom, I had it make a backup of my current system. After it rebooted, I found that I could no longer mount my SD cards over the usb. Not good I thought so I had rom manager load the backup. That fixed the usb connectivity problem.
Next I tried to install a new rom. I downloaded the new 2.3 release, stuck it on the SD card and told ROM Manager to do its thing. It got to 'Installing Update' and then didn't do anything for 15 minutes or so. I guessed it was probably not going anywhere so I pulled the battery. Luckily it hadn't touched the old installation and booted normally afterwards.
Q2) SOLVED - What if it hadn't? How would I get back into the recovery screen in order to reinstall my backup? I know how to get into it from within Rom Manager, but if the OS doesn't start then what? Volume up, Menu + power on buttons.
This gave me pause for thought so I've got a few more questions before I touch it again.
Q3) After I install a new Rom, will the system still be rooted?
Q4) Could installing a Rom copy over the recovery system that is put in place by Rom Manager? I gather not since the recovery file is never exactly installed.
Q5) Are there any other potential pitfalls I could fall into?[/I]
Thanks for all your help guys!
EDIT - I have answered some of my questions through some ongoing detective work. If anyone can give me a conclusive answer on 3 or 5 then I'd still be very grateful.
