Help SEVERE battery drain

kalaster

Android Enthusiast
As of recently (past few days) I've noticed horrendous battery life. So bad in fact, that my phone will not last 4 hours after a full charge O.o Also noticed that the phone is a bit too hot for being in idle. Running Stock 4.3 not rooted.

So figured something was running in the background, at first glance i notice the android OS was at the top of the battery list at a whopping 37%!!

So the past few days i've been googleing this issue and im not the only one. Come to find out, disabling location services in settings revealed that the culprit may be from Google services. Though disabling location access doesn't solve my issue, it adds Google Services to the top of battery list, using up 50%. I've searching for days and trying various methods, some worked temporarily for the first time, but never solved the issue. I even went as far as a factory reset which solved it for about 3 hours, and STILL this problem persists.

I'm at a loss guys, i've tried researching but nothing seems to work. I use my phone daily for work and i need to figure out a solution ASAP. any ideas? :(

I think it might be 4.3. Every 4.3 custom rom I've run yields a lot less battery life than 4.2.2 roms did. I use to get 4-5 hours of screen time and now I only get about 3 hours.

Have you gone into settings, Google account and unchecked boxes. I have only Gmail and App backup checked. I unchecked everything else.

I haven't seen this too much, but for work I spend a lot of time at a desk and I charge when I'm there, so I'm not sure I would notice anything right away.

I certainly don't have the heat issue.

I had a similar issue (same symptoms) with my Nexus 7 which turned out to be some sort of incompatibility between certain routers and Google's wifi battery-saving option which had the exact opposite effect by putting Google Services into some sort of loop. I disabled the setting and my Nexus 7 became both cooler and now lasts as many days as it did hours on the default setting...

However that setting effects only wifi connections so it's probably not the same cause in this case, even though the symptoms are exactly the same - and it was impossible to force stop Google Services when in the "hot battery" state, only a reboot would stop it... for a while, anyway.

I have posted a pic of yesterday's battery usage still getting pathetic battery life -_-

Have you got your location services turned on? I find that these can be quite battery hungry...

i've turned them all off in setting and also, google now, facebook, gps, and google maps. ive even been keeping my data off to conserve as much battery as possible.

Did you install any apps just before the problem started? Maybe there's a bad app wrecking your battery

actually, ive been using wake lock detector the last few days, though it says 93% was deep sleep, i found that facebook awoke the OS 369 times in the course of 7 hours, and also i found that Timely awoke the OS 538 times in 7 hours. I tried ignoring timely because i love the app so much, tried uninstalling facebook instead but didnt do much. So i just uninstalled Timely a few min ago and will see if that worked. I know the app updated itself a day or so before the issue started.

On my HTC Timely has woken it 268 times in the last 7 hours. But that's added 9 seconds it's kept the device awake, so I've not worried.

I have got Timely's sync off though in account and sync settings. I can't think of a good reason it should be syncing.

I took a walk with a friend, got some pizza, I come back and this is what I got. Still didn't solve it, should the phone idle be that high!? I was thinking of a fresh start, reflashing 4.3, or 4.2.2 and going from there. But my computer will not recognize the phone at all.

so i decided to try a factory reset again yesterday morning, though this time, i went 100% stock apps, nothing else but updated the stock apps. and for 6 hours i experienced normal battery consumption and the phone's tempurture felt normal for hardly being used, cool to the touch. but out of the blue, i decided to pick it up and then i felt the heat on the back of the phone. and from then on the battery life plummeted, only 34 min of on screen time with light web browsing and texting, and was dead in mere hours.

do i have a bad battery? absolutly nothing was syncing, i turned off all the google apps sync, disabled location settings in the setting and maps, and i even turned on airplane mode for an hour to see if that would help, it didnt!! :(

i dont know what to do, i've seen a few threads on this issue, and few with the EXACT symptoms that started around the same time, but the issue was left opened and unsolved. I cant get google to replace it cuz my phone is unlocked and cant get it relocked :(

oh, and if it helps, i manually flashed 4.3 when it first arrived. idk if that will help figure out the issue...

I think it's definitely something to do with 4.3. I've noticed the same thing this past couple of days and my wireless charger also stopped working. I've flashed franco's kernel this afternoon and it seems to have sorted the problem. Will give it a full charge tonight and see what tomorrow brings.

I look forward to your results. Wish I could do the same -_-

Seems to be much better today. Managed to charge on my charging mat without any heating issues and my battery is still at 65% after a full day at work.

I just had a thought... I had recently switched to Net10 like a week before the battery issues, could the APN settings cause the issue? like the settings were not properly configured and maybe a constant loss of signal be the effect of a bad APN setting? I have noticed that my signal bars will go gray (indicating no data) from time to time and come back to blue.

I bought my nexus 4 with it already updated to the 4.3 and have absolutely no battery issues. In fact it holds a charge pretty well. I'm a pretty heavy user and with most smartphones have to charge at least one time during the day. This cuts it for me, though.

when you click on the graph in your battery settings, what colours show up on the mobile network signal line?

If the colours are green then there's not much of a problem. If they're red then thats why :)

Damn, was hoping that was the problem XD but I'm starting to thing the battery is fine, and the problem lies within android.

... I have noticed that my signal bars will go gray (indicating no data) from time to time and come back to blue.

I believe that the gray bars, when superscripted by an "E" etc. indicate only a lack of "Google server" connection ... data is still enabled, as indicated by web browsing, other email capabilities, etc.
