Hello :) I'm a total android noob, I got my SGS with Froyo about a month ago but it has terrible problems like laging and it takes forever when going from screen to screen. I'v been looking for a solution in several forums for a couple of days, and I understad that I need to root the phone and then change the rom, but i can't get any specific info: What is the best way for me to root? Do I need Odin and how do get it? What is the best rom?
Where do i begin?????
pls pls pls help me :(

Samsung Galaxy S phone that has froyo.. a month ago???? not rooted???

what phone do you have?? where are you located???

I think the best way to root is to flash a custom kernel like Hardcore's Speedmod, you can find a link to all the stuff you'll need here. Just make sure you read everything on there. I mean everything. The SGS is not an easy phone to brick, but it's not impossible so make sure you read everything and check through all instructions before you attempt to do it.

I'm sorry if it sounds a bit condescending, but better get it right the first time right?

If you wanna use the above make sure you're on froyo. Check the rom here: Settings > about phone > it'll be here.

Then you can go about and choose what ROM you want. Read this to choose which one you want to flash: [ROM LIST] Latest Galaxy S ROMs & Developers [UPDATED 02.01.2011] - xda-developers

I've used quite a lot of them, but my personal favourites are Darkyy's and any one of Doc's.

Oh yes, one last question: what SGS do you have? Is it the international version? One of the American ones? Captivate or Fascinate or Vibrant or Epic? Before you do anything make sure that the kernel or rom you are flashing is meant for your device.
Again, read carefully, follow instructions to the letter and happy flashing! :)

I'm from Israel so I suppose its the international ver. I checked my settings, it says firmware 2.2, build number froyo.jhjp8...
I installed about 20 apps but it had the same problems even before.

Before you do anything, there is one thing you can do, and this sorts out most problems you will ever have with the phone.

You need to do a data wipe/factory reset, to do this, follow this:

power phone off, and leave for a few mins to make sure it has powered down completely.

Press and hold the following keys in this order:
Volume Up + Home Key + Power Button.

When the phone boots up and gets to the flashing "S" release the power button. (keep the other 2 buttons pressed)

When you see a screen with a lot of coloured text release the volume up and home keys.

At the top of the screen you will see some blue text, look for data wipe/factory reset. Use the volume up/down to navigate to it, press the home key OK the action

You will be taken to another screen with blue text, there will be a lot of NO's, in the middle will be one YES, use the volume up/down keys to navigate to YES, press the home key to OK the action.

It is advisable to do a data wipe/factory reset after doing a firmware update.

Doing this will most likely wipe your data, contacts, apps, music, memos, ect so make sure you back things up before hand.

you will be able to re-download any apps from the market you have installed.
