Help Shortcuts for text

mschoy

Lurker
I can't seem to activate shortcuts for my own typed text on my phone despite following the seemingly simple instructions I've been given when I googled the question. What I'm doing is:
Settings/Language & keyboard/HTC Sense Input/Personal dictionary/+/..........
Can anyone help, plese?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums. Try typing one of your personal words in a text. Select it when it shows up in the list of suggested words. You should be given the option to add it to your dictionary. It should show up as a suggestion from that point forward.

I don't think you are allowed to add words to your dictionary when accessing it. You can edit or remove them only. I might be wrong but give the above a try and see if your words show up.

Hi, that procedure works fine on my M9.

What HTC phone have you got and is this the first time you have tried to add a word? What response do you get when you try?

Hello. Thanks for your reply, but I wasn't referring to adding a typed word to my dictionary, but rather, adding a word with an associated shortcut for it. (eg. adding "talk to you later", then assigning "ttyl" as the shortcut, then in future typing "ttyl" and "talk to you later" will appear. These were the instructions from HTC Support that I followed, but it doesn''t seem to work.

Type even faster when you create text shortcuts to words and phrases. For example, instead of typing the English phrase "‍Talk to you later"‍, save a few keystrokes by adding the ttyl shortcut. In your message or email, just type "‍ttyl"‍, and then tap the spacebar to enter the complete phrase.

Important: This feature is available only for Latin-based languages.

  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Language & keyboard > HTC Sense Input.
  2. Tap Personal dictionary >

    .
  3. Enter a word or phrase, and then enter its text shortcut. Be sure to remember this shortcut, including the uppercase and lowercase letters you've typed.
  4. Tap OK.

Hi, I have an M7 and yes, its the first time I've tried to add a words with a shortcut. When I try to do it, it accepts my words and the assigned shortcut, but when I try to use it in an app, it doesn''t work.

Mmmm.... this is odd - I've only ever added words previously. I've just tried to add a phrase and I can't even do that! - it won't let me enter a space never mind the 'shortcut' so you are getting further than me :(.

Update :- Just checked on my wife's M7 and the facility to add a phrase and shortcut is there so it has been dropped from the M9, however although I can add the phrase and shortcut, like you I haven't been able to use it - must be missing something :(:(.

Hi, just got it working by enabling 'Word prediction' in HTC Sense Input - Advanced. It's not a facility I use so it took a while for me to realise what the problem was.

:)
