hi all i just downloaded kies with the intention of sending sms from the pc.. the one thing i bought this phone for, alas you cant do it... ANYWAY...

it says a new version of firmware is available and asks me to upgrade I say yes and it starts to make a backup but fails because of an unknown error. I have not tries to skip the backup and just update, but im not sure if like with an iphone installing new firmware will erase the phone contents, could anyone let me know?

With reference to your first point - you can send sms from your pc if you have wifi and use the kies air app that is on the phone

thanks guys. I connected to samsung kies using kies air on the phone and saw no detail of sms? I just saw photos, videos, contacts etc... where abouts is the sms option?

Would love to also work out how to do this via usb cable but this is something I've been trying to find out in another thread since I've owned the phone!

Have you connected correctly? When I open kies air on my phone it gives me an address to type into a browser window on my pc - within that I can access a variety of things on my phone of which messages is one me them

On a similar note, I'm new to Samsung and noticed in Kies a new firmware upgrade available this week, are these updates non-destructive, that is, all my screen layouts, apps, data, etc... will remain intact after the upgrade?

Sorry for the potentially dumb question, just wondering how big a job it's going to be to do the upgrade :-)

yeah. upgrading the firmware generally does not change anything. although i havent ever updated via kies, but im pretty sure its the same

Go have a look at MyPhoneExplorer which is free. You can send SMS via PC, backup and archive SMS conversations, Save your call log export them all to Excel or other formats. Even sync contacts and calendars - but I don't use it for sync.

It's out there, free and it will do what you are after...
