Should i get an Intercept for my son ?

I'm looking to get an Intercept for my 16 yr old son who is currently using a Samsung Jack on TMobile prepaid. I'm using a Captivate on ATT which has some problems (mainly GPS). Are there any common problems with the Intercept ?
How fast is the 3g on VM ? Radio Shack has the intercept on sale for $199. He was thinking about getting the Blackberry but i think he can do more with Android ;)

Thanks

i would highly recommend the intercept, for a teenager or otherwise. check out my user review of the phone on phonescoop.com if you want some indepth info on my opinion.

xxEDITxx:

or i can just copy paste it

"My little Epic..."

I really don't see why this phone has received so much flak, all in all, I thoroughly enjoy the features and functionality of this mid-range Android device. I've had the phone since 12-30-10 and my breakdown is as follows:

PROS:
Android 2.1 OS
good call quality
FULL four row (and rather spacious) QWERTY
physical talk and end keys
large, capacitive touch screen
3.2 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus
slim enough form factor to fit in the "cell pocket" of jeans
decent amount of heft in hand

CONS:
no 2.2 update as of yet for Virgin Mobile
system can be slow and unresponsive AT TIMES
no flash on the cam
four android capacitive buttons can be unresponsive from time to time
incoming call screen takes about 4-7 seconds to come up *HIGHLY annoying*

I am on Virgin Mobile in the DFW, Texas area. Call quality is what one would expect. The ONLY gripe i have with calls is strictly incoming. You will hear the ringtone, but the screen itself will be black and you cant see who is calling. This phone is not my talk phone, so I'm not terribly concerned.

At 25 big ones a month, you really can't beat that price for a damn good, mid-range, Android device. Try out some apps, personalize your experience, and you should be good to go til you are ready to sign your life away for the Epic 4G...

In my opinion the 3g is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast. Compared to my ex boyfriends iphone, my intercept can load an app or website SO MUCH faster. It's wonderful.

I'm a 17 year old son. my dad got it for me. I love the Facebook app preinstalled! (there is a update or two make sure he updates them, for FB chat) and install "Dolphin Browser HD" a better web browser for android.

Also, for a game: "Robo Defense" there is a paid and free one, i liked free one so I bought it.

oh, for paid apps he'll need to go to checkout.google.com and set that up.

Hope he enjoys android! This spring we will get android 2.2 update for apps2sd, with that he can install LOTS of apps. I'd be careful and tell him not to go app crazy. install maybe 12ish apps for now, as long as they aren't more than 2MB (ish) in size once 2.2 comes most apps can be installed to the phone, then in settings moved to the SD card and run from there, freeing IMPORTANT/VITAL internal memory.

I know all this because I used to have a Motorola Cliq Android 1.5 phone on TMobile and is SUCKED compared to this phone!!

Thanks for all your input. He decided to try the Intercept.
One question about the memory, the specs say 2GB internal but how much of that is for apps ? Can music, pictures and video be put on a external memory card ?

Thanks

Yep! You can put pics & video & music and everything else on the SD card. As of right now we can't put the apps on there, but we will be able to after 2.2 rolls out!

Picked up the Intercept today. Internet seems very slow. Using the speed test app from the market the download speed is in the 200's(k). Signal is 3 bars. I checked the coverage map and it shows 3g for my address...

Internet would be not as fast as home Internet or office Internet. However, streaming music or You tube is pretty good. Keeping at least 50 MB RAM free for now works for me. Internal RAM is 256 MB and ROM is 512 MB. Android 2.2 (Froyo) upgrade will make this phone more awesome!!!

I my opinion, Internet speed is also dependent on the quality of the browser.

I've tried them all, and for me, Opera Mini just flies. Faster than my wife's iPhone by far. Smoe of the others haev nuice features like Skyfire, but I decided to keep Opera.

Actually, if you download Astro, you can move all currently unused apps to your sd card (backup), then just uninstall them off your phone. When you want to use them, just use Astro to re-install them, only takes a few seconds to do both, and save a ton of memory!

This is my first Android phone (came from Blackberry) and think it is WAYYYYY better than any blackberry ever was! There are a TON of free apps, I have yet to buy one.

Forget the Intercept, get the Optimus, cheaper and MUCH better performance. I became tired of the lag of the Intercept, and out of frustration, laid out another $150 to get the Optimus (I had the Intercept for anly 3 months). the Optimus works as smooth as the iPhone. This thing is GREAT. Worth every penny.
